Metropolitan Region Stettin: First results of the cross-border cooperation

15.05.2016

In cooperation with different polish scientific institutions, planning agencies and government organizations the HIE-RO-Institut is involved in the investigation of cross-border metropolitan region Szczecin and the neighboring regions of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the West Pomeranian region. The focus is on the regional innovation potential - especially in the field of "Green Economy". In this context, the Institute and the Regional Office for Spatial Planning of West Pomeranian Voivodeship are currently working on a regional analysis, which may in the future serve as a potential guideline for decision makers. As the first output in this project the draft joint brochure on "Integration of strategic planning processes in the regions West Pomeranian Voivodeship and Mecklenburg Vorpommern" was discussed in early May.

On the basis of spatial planning the brochure is intend to analyze the socio-economic, demographic, economic and educational structure of neighboring regions by facing each other.

Background is the idea, forced by the government of mecklenburg-Vorpommern, of establishing a "metropolitan Stettin" as a cross-border project, which will serve not only the understanding, but the Community's infrastructure and regional economic development. This presupposes a common description of the problem, the definition of operational objectives, the institutionalization of cooperative decision-making and the coordination of political programs. An important prerequisite for policy design and evaluation of policies is a unified spatial delimitation of the metropolitan area as well as a regional information system and a demand-driven reporting system.
